Wadiz, H2 Board Game Funding Surges 12x↑… 'Hundred-Million-Won Projects' Emerge in Succession
- 7-10 Month Game Category Transaction Volume Surges 12x, Payment Count Grows More Than 2x
- Board Games Account for 89% Share… Fandom-Driven Consumption Expands
- Projects Like 'Agemonias, Cyberpunk 2077' Achieve Hundred-Million-Won Funding and Premium Limited Edition Success
Wadiz announced on the 24th that its game category saw explosive growth, with transaction volume surging approximately 12-fold (1,089%) year-over-year in the second half of this year (July-October).
On an annual basis (as of January-October 20), transaction volume increased by 307% and payment count by more than 102%, demonstrating the expansion of crowdfunding in the gaming sector. Notably, board games led this growth, accounting for 89% of the total game category's transaction volume.
The number of notification subscribers for board game projects this year (17,667) has already exceeded the entire game category of last year (17,470). This demonstrates the rapid expansion of fandoms seeking to discover and collect board games with new and rare value through crowdfunding.
Wadiz analyzed that board games are one of the content categories with the best fit for crowdfunding. This is because fandoms have high concentration, and accurate demand forecasting is key to business success.
Through crowdfunding, manufacturers can predict actual demand in advance and establish production and distribution strategies, while supporters can be the first to experience rare and collectible works such as limited editions or Korean versions. This structure is accelerating the growth of board game crowdfunding.
In fact, half of the top 10 game projects this year were board games, with both the 1st and 2nd ranked projects achieving hundred-million-won funding.
The Korean version of the cooperative adventure board game Agemonias, which opened on the 17th, surpassed 500 million won in just one day and garnered an explosive response. With a world board game rating (BGG) of 9.0, this high-quality board game combines story and cooperative play and, despite its premium price point of 300,000-500,000 won, saw most prepared quantities sold out. The project runs until the 31st.
Earlier in August, the Korean version board game of the globally popular IP Cyberpunk 2077 was exclusively launched and achieved cumulative funding of 333 million won. The strategy of targeting IP fandoms through the addition of crowdfunding-exclusive editions proved effective.
A Wadiz representative stated, "Wadiz has a thick layer of 'premium consumers' who not only appeal to existing board game fandoms but also explore new tastes, and actively participate in high-value rewards," and added, "With high average payment amounts and successive hundred-million-won funding success cases, the platform is establishing itself as a 'premium launch platform' within the board game market."
Meanwhile, Wadiz plans to introduce new major board game projects in succession in the second half, with various projects in preparation to continue the board game boom and generate anticipation among fandoms. In late November, Wadiz will be the first to unveil the Korean version of 'Final Girl,' a board game that achieved 6.5 billion won in cumulative global crowdfunding.
