Guide to Setting Fundraising Goals
What You’ll Learn from This Article
- When setting a funding goal, creators must consider not only production costs but also shipping, packaging, a contingency fund (approximately 20% of production costs), and platform fees.
- We’ve compiled a list of items to check and calculation formulas to help you set a realistic funding goal.
- Be sure to review the key points you must consider when setting a funding goal, as it differs from setting sales targets for e-commerce.
01. What is the funding goal?
The target amount is the minimum amount needed to carry out the project. It should not be the “amount you hope to raise,” but rather the “amount that can realistically be achieved.”
Why is this important?
The success of your project depends on whether you’ve raised this target amount by midnight on the project’s end date.
- If the target amount is too high:It will be difficultto reach, the project will end without reaching its goal, and supporters’ payments will not be processed.
- If the target amount is too low: You may face difficulties because the funds raised fall short of what’s actually needed to produce the Rewards.
Additionally, once funding opens, the achievement rate is displayed to supporters. If the funding goal is set too high, the achievement rate will appear low even if the same amount is raised, which can influence supporters’ decision to participate.
Points to Consider for Profit-Seeking Projects
1. Is there a penalty for failing to reach the funding goal?
There are no separate penalties for failing to reach the target amount. The project will end, and supporters’ payments will not be processed. Therefore, no penalties, service fees, or settlement fees will be charged to the maker.
2. This is a product I used to sell in an e-commerce store—can’t I just set the price based on that?
Funding is based on the minimum cost required to actually produce and ship the Rewards, not on the retail price. You must calculate this amount by working backward, including fees, shipping costs, and a contingency fund. If you set the price based on the retail price, you may overlook fees and shipping costs, which can result in an actual loss.
3. What happens if the target amount and the actual payment amount differ?
Even if the actual payment amount is slightly lower than the funding goal due to payment failures or other reasons, the project is still considered a success. Therefore, it’s important to set the funding goal at a level that allows you to reliably deliver the Rewards from the start. Conversely, if the funding amount significantly exceeds the goal, you must verify that you can produce and ship the increased quantity according to the promised schedule. If schedule adjustments are necessary, simply use the “News” section to explain the reasons for the delay and provide an update on progress.
02. Six Items to Include When Calculating Your Goal Amount
To accurately calculate your funding goal, you must consider not only the direct production cost of the product but also all hidden expenses, such as shipping costs, contingency funds, and platform fees.
| Items | Details | Calculation Formula |
| Rewards-Related Costs | Production Costs (Cost of Goods): The cost of actually producing the Rewards | Unit price × minimum order quantity |
| Shipping Costs: The cost of shipping rewards to supporters | Unit price × Minimum order quantity | |
| Packaging Costs: Costs associated with packaging, such as boxes, cushioning materials, and stickers | Unit price × minimum order quantity | |
| Labor costs: Personnel costs required to carry out the project | Calculation must be tailored to each specific situation | |
| Contingency: Costs set aside to cover defects, additional production, and unforeseen expenses | Approximately 20% of production costs | |
| wadiz commission | Fees for service use and payment settlement | |
03. Calculating a Realistic Fundraising Goal
If you’re unsure whether the funding goal you’ve set is appropriate, you can calculate the daily funding target by dividing the “funding goal ÷ number of funding days.”
- Funding Goal ÷ Number of Funding Days = Amount to Be Raised Per Day
Let me give you an example using a funding goal of 1 million won. Assuming the project runs for 30 days, the daily funding target would be as follows.
- 1,000,000 ÷ 30 days = 33,333 won
If this amount feels achievable, your target amount is appropriate. If it feels too daunting, lower your target amount; if it feels too easy, try raising it a bit.
